I was referred to Dr. Hammerschlag by a neurologist, Harold Weinberg, MD, at NYU Langone Medical Center for complete right facial paralysis caused by a tumor at the skull base.  Dr. Hammerschlag was very supportive and put me at ease with his proposed treatment of this unusual problem.  He explained in detail how he was going to deal with this problem. With a neurosurgical colleague, John Golfinos, MD, in a combined approach, Dr. Hammerschlag removed the tumor and grafted my facial nerve back together.  Several months later, the facial function returned almost completely to normal and there was no loss of hearing.  I was able to go onto college and then pursue a career in law enforcement. As I learned more about my surgery, I consider myself very fortunate to have received such wonderful care at the NYU Langone Medical Center with a terrific outcome.
